1. Check the Base Metal
The base metal determines how a piece will behave over time.
Avoid:
- Brass
- Copper-heavy alloys
- Unspecified “mixed metals”
Look for:
- Sterling silver
- Stainless steel
- Solid gold
Stronger base metals mean less corrosion, less reaction with skin, and better longevity.
2. Understand the Gold Layer
If it’s gold-coloured, ask:
- Is it solid gold?
- Gold vermeil?
- Standard gold plating?
- PVD coated?
Thin plating over brass wears quickly.
Gold vermeil uses a thick layer of gold over sterling silver.
PVD coating bonds gold to stainless steel at a molecular level, creating a much more durable surface.
The coating method matters more than the colour.
3. Look at the Clasp and Finishing
Small details reveal quality:
- Is the clasp sturdy?
- Are links evenly finished?
- Does it feel smooth against the skin?
- Does it have weight without feeling heavy?
Well-made jewellery feels intentional.
